Basketball has been an iconic sport in the United States for decades. Basketball is loved by many Americans; be that as a spectator or a child shooting hoops with a friend or parent, or even by some who choose to turn it in to their professional career. However, the true origins of Basketball date back to the late 1800’s. In the early 1890’s, it is believed to be in 1891, James Naismith invented what has developed throughout history to become the popular game of basketball that Americans know and love today. James Naismith was a Canadian-American P.E teacher, doctor and sports coach. Mr. Naismith created basketball as a way for athletes to keep fit inside during the winter.
In the beginning basketball was played with a soccer ball. It wasn’t until the 1950’s that the first balls designed specifically for basketball were created. The first basketballs were brown. It wasn’t until the late 1950’s that American basketball player and coach Tony Hinkle introduced the orange ball that is now the iconic ball, known worldwide as the basketball. Tony Hinkle wanted a ball that stood out for players while playing and thus settled on the bright colored orange ball we know today as the basketball.
In the beginning dribbling the ball was not part of the original game of basketball, apart from what was named the bounce pass to players on the same team. Passing the ball was the main way of moving the ball around the court. When dribbling, bouncing the basketball up and down while moving around the court, was introduced it was significantly inhibited by the irregular shape of the balls used in early basketball. However, the 1950’s improvement of basketball manufacture, resulted in a better shaped ball, therefore making it possible for dribbling to become a key part of the basketball game. Basketball is one of only five ball sports that have been recognized as having been invented by North Americans!
